Photo shoot fabulous.

Saturday was an adventure. I hopped, skipped and jumped on to a plane to fly to Auckland for a photo shoot with mumble-mumble all in aid of a very good cause that I can’t talk about yet. (All shall be reveled next month).

We pulled up outside the random studio in ‘I don’t know where we are suburb’ in Auckland and I felt that eerie ‘I have been here before’ feeling. Turns out I had been there once before many many years ago when I interviewed Kiwi Super Model Rachel Hunter for TVNZ. She was at that exact studio shooting the marketing material for her clothing campaign with The Warehouse.
Small world.

I met the assembled team of experts for the shoot. A make-up artist come hairdresser: Stefan – he was my mane-man (get it!) lol He did gravity defying things to my hair, (he is also the first hairdresser that I have ever worked with on a shoot that hasn’t had a bit of a freak out at how much hair I have – so loved him immediately and the other reason to love Stefan was he used this Cloud 9 thing on my hair that was like a vintage ring sizer and it gave me the most awesome curls – that stayed in all afternoon – you are a legend Stefan!) Jane was the super nice & funky stylist who had sourced the incredible pieces of clothing & accessories for the shoot. There was Louise the journalist writing the piece and Tanya the nail technician slash hair stylist slash make up artist. Tanya gave me her ‘make-up tip’ du jour and it was a goodie. I think this top is changing my life already) There were photographers, lighting assistants and other VIPs coming in and out all afternoon. And as lovely as those folk were… there was also a cat. I walked in and immediately had to ‘Stop, Drop and Pat the Cat’. Meow.
He was a big tough old tabby and he loved smooches. All was good in the world for there was a cat. In. The. Building.

I was whisked through hair and make up, shimmied into some Nancy Gantz… ( my new BFF). Before long it was my turn to stand in front of the camera lens. Lights were tweaked and moved while I smiled, faux-laughed and faux-smoldered at the camera for about 20 minutes. Such fun!
It really was. It took me about an hour to relax and while Tanya was doing my makeup I realized why I was on edge… It was because I am so used to working hard on shoots like this as a stylist where I am arranging, ironing, dressing, running, organizing, holding reflectors, feeding people, doing nails and working, working, working that it was hard to realx and simply enjoy the process.
Once I recognised my totally unnecessary tension I could turn my brain off and simply enjoy the day – it became much more fun! I had shoes, jewels and dresses thrown at me and at one stage had about 4 people working their magic on me at one time – it really was a big thrill. My hair became progressively bigger, my eyelashes were bigger than Ben Hur and my nails became 70’s throwback chic in pearl.
Can’t wait to see what the shots look like and how the magazine uses them because the waiting is by far the hardest part of the whole experience. (Apart from brushing out all that back combing)

While we wait let’s enjoy some behind the scenes shenanigans:

I believe I can fly.

Yesterday to fly up to Auckland I ordered up some turbulence for the flight. (I see flying like a fair-ground ride that you pay money to go on so I am always sitting in my seat hoping and praying for some spills and thrills) then I feel like I have had my money’s worth. I just want to feel my stomach lurch once or twice, and that lightheaded woozy ness… Just a little.
That flight was perfect! Just as we came into land on Auckland we got slapped by some wind, or a hit an air pocket and we lurched around giving me that fairground ride feeling.

Today’s flight was purely about gorgeous scenery. The clouds were for once NOT hiding Mt Taranaki from view.
Wow. Breathtaking. Now this is what I paid for!

Winter garden.

My gal pal and I took a detour to the Winter Garden today.
It was magical – like stepping back in time. The statues, the goldfish ponds, the exotic foliage.
We missed the stinky flower (phew I think) and the sunflowers, but were in time for a great show of begonias, orchids, hibiscus and the water lilies were spectacular!

I love spending time with and in nature. I find it rejuvenating and inspirational. I feel that Mother Nature is the ultimate stylist. When I see the colours and textures she combines I get excited by new ideas and invigorated by new possibilities I would never have thought of.

Thanks Mother Nature – thanks for all the beautiful.

Accessory Du Jour

Today I was very much inspired by St Valentine and chose my accessory with cheesy love motives in mind. I went with a faceted onyx heart necklace set amongst a strand of raw and natural looking freshwater pearls. (This iconic piece is called ‘Braveheart’ and is from Kagi – it was designed to support the Child Cancer Foundation.)
I love wearing this elegant and timeless piece. It makes me smile. X

Valentines Day

Woke up to smooches from my tiny wee girl cat this morning. She was the runt of the litter so is like a cat but smaller. Plus she is only one year old. Awww so cute. May she be a kitten forever. Anyway I thought Valentines day had peaked right there and then she was so adorable.
Yesterday a girlfriend shared her home-made choc-chip heart shaped cookies with my Husband and I. These cookies are the baking-sonifcation of love. (Like personification but in baking) lol – Each year for Valentines Day she bakes them for her family as a token of her love. It is a gesture that everyone enjoys – especially the tastebuds. They like it a lot.

In super stealth mode, dressed as a ninja – somehow I managed to
Sneak a surprise Valentines day card into husbands bag when he was not looking and felt awesomely proud, excited and tricky all at the same time.
Good feelings. I had a small dose of smugness because about a week ago I had ordered him his most favourite flower to be delivered to his work on Valentines day. It really was shaping up to be an awesome Valentines day!
Husband surprised me with a massive bunch of delicate & unusual wild flowers from one of my favourite Wellington Florists: Flowers Manuela. He called to thank me for his flowers and I remarked how hilarious it was that we wrote the same quote in each other’s card!
Years ago we saw a Lenny Henry stand up show at the St James in Welly. The show was brilliant: intelligent, witty, hilarious, and twisted with surprises… There was a quote that night from a particularly funny part of the show that we both enjoyed and we had both written that quite in the card. Too adorable.

I recalled how in my single days my girlfriends and I used to send each other cards to remind us of how much love we have on our lives, it may not have been romantic love – but it was no less important and absolutely worthy of acknowledgment too.

Now I am at home – my girlfriend in Oz has sent me the perfect Valentines a Day card and I am feeling very loved and very grateful.

As nice as it was to receive ‘stuff’ today the most fun part for me was the time I spent thinking about others and planning something thoughtful for them.

I hope everyone enjoys giving thanks today, thanks for the love in their life – in whatever form it arrives in: a furry friend, a rainbow, a text, a card, chocolates, a hug, a bunch of flowers, dinner out, home made cookies or a phone call.

“I love you-Bye”

Accessory Du Jour

Today’s necklace depicts symbols of faith on a little dog tag & a tiny silver skull. I’m sure the symbolism is heavy and deep. I simply like it for what it is: pretty.

Just Juicing.

When we came back from our Adventure of a lifetime holiday extravaganza (yes it gets bigger each time I mention it!) we did a 3 day juice fast. Now we are hooked on juicing and have included a juice almost everyday.

I am drinking foods (namely fruit and vegetables) that I would never normally eat and feeling better for it.
After the 3 day juice fast I did not experience the juice high that some juicing enthusiasts talk about but I did receive many compliments about my skin all at once – literally within a couple of days, so that was no kwinky-dink. That was juicing.

Beetroot is my new bff and Husband & I are devouring celery, cucumber and a disturbing amount of fruits and veg that we actually like.
The worms in the worm farm are benefitting from all the leftover pulp to the point that I think there has been a population explosion.

Day two of my juice fast was hell. I had headaches on my headaches… Apparently that was me withdrawing from the bad stuff I like to eat – namely salt and sugar. Day three I felt a whole lot better which was a massive relief.
I was never hungry. Not once. I missed chewing. Masticating. Gnashing, grinding, tearing and ripping my food. Who knew that was such a large part if the enjoyment of eating?

When I did return to eating solids I chewed much longer and much much slower than pre juice fast. Feeling the solid food traveling down my throat, into my esophagus and down into my stomach was a very unpleasant feeling and quite put me off my food for about a day.

I have a teeny touch of a sweet tooth so naturally I love juicing with pineapple, apples, carrots, mint and anything tropical. Ginger is a zinger of an addition to a bland juice as is parsley or a tiny touch of mint. It is amazing the amount of flavour you can get out of a few leaves with a masticating juicer.
We bought the Oskar juicer from Common Sense Organics and it is easy to use and simple & straightforward to clean and to reassemble (amen to that).
I am a new juicing convert. Don’t be afraid, I am not looking to recruit new juicers or to proclaim juicing as the new black, the best thing since sliced bread or make outrageous claims about losing weight, anti aging or cure-alls.
Juicing is just yummy. I like yummy. Plus the colours are pretty.
Do it for the colours!

Don’t you think?

Photo Shoot.

From time to time I am approached to style a photo shoot. This is one of my favourite things to do. It is my bliss.
This was one of those times… However this time I had only two short days notice and I had a bad case of the mean reds. So I nearly said no. Well actually, I did say no… Then I changed my mind. I really wanted to work with the people involved and I couldn’t turn down a days work on my bliss. Why would I say no to that? Madness. Plus, the photographer sent me a look book of inspiration and while I really liked the direction he was headed, one in particular featuring kohl eyeliner inspired me. So I said yes! (with enthusiasm)

I turn up on the day of the shoot with suitcases full of fabulous. Sourced from some awesome stores, and some vintage selections from my private collection of taonga.

I bring along some baking that my Mum made: tan square and lots of it. (No one ever remembers to bring food on these shoots, and as fulfilling as it is, you can’t survive on a diet of fashion alone…!!) so along with the tan square, I kept us stocked with water, tunes from my iPod and laughs.

I can’t share the shots yet as they are still being finalised, but I can show you a behind the scenes sneak peek at the final shot of the day:

I moustache you a question…

It is tres fabulous no?
Needless to say but by the end of the day, my mean reds were gone. You can’t stay in a bad mood with a faux  &  demon-esq brows drawn on your face in kohl. It’s impossible. Do try it.

Harpers Bazaar Emoji joy

New York Fashion week is on right now! I can almost hear the air kisses from the other side of the world. The genius team at Harpers Bazaar have gifted to the world some snappy fash-mag-hag worthy emoji to brighten up social media land because seriously, why type a whole word with fresh from the salon nails when a cute emoji will do nicely?

How excited am I to be able to include the cartoon likeness of Choupette in my musings? Oh happy day. I do follow this famous feline on Twitter so it is a natural modern-day evolution in our relationship to include hi in my conversations. And nothing spells out the inner workings of my crazed imagination better than a cartoon homage to Linda Evangelista’s Sept 1992 Bazaar cover (shot by Patrick Demarchelier).

Don’t say it with words, say it with Linda, the Olsen Twins, or a glass of champagne….

Twinsies!

I’m seeing double!

Road Trip to Taupo

I must be insane. I suggested another road trip on the bike. This time to Taupo. A short five hours away.

The excuse: a summer concert featuring 3 legends of rock: 10CC, Starship and Lynard Skynard.

I did love me some Starship in the 80’s… Because nothing’s gonna stop us now, and We built this city on rock and roll! (Or as infamously written on MisheardLyrics.com We built this city on the wrong damn road)

If you are not sure if you have heard of Lynard Skynard (awkward) you may be familiar with popular ditty: Sweet Home Alabama.

10CC reminded the crowd of The things we do for love and Dreadlock Holiday bought the whole crowd to their feet… Dancing in the rain with a few thousand other happy folk in the middle of the day is my new measure of a good time.
