Shadow Selfie.

Here is my spin on the selfie craze: the shadow selfie.

IMG_6523-0.JPG

I took my first ever shadow selfie standing on Courtenay Place Wellington while there was an eclipse. It was impossible to take a decent photo of the eclipse with my phone so I took a moon-shadow selfie instead.

Since then they have become a fun alternative option to the traditional selfie.

Sometimes they feature special guests…

Summer loving.

Had me a blast. I realized today that while the heat is jandal meltingly unbearable on the strip, poolside you can at least cool yourself off with a dip every 30 minutes or more. Thus I proclaim that poolside is my new favourite Vegas venue.

In the shade though.
Yes the shade. Where it is not so hot that I might actually expire I can rest, read, relax and blog. (I am typing this from the comfort of my lounger)
And this is heaven.

I can’t bottle the blue sky, the rays of sun or the heat to bring back to freezing cold Wellington but I can get myself some brag worthy tan lines to bring home.

Excuse me while I go cool off in the pool. Before my phone explodes from heat exhaustion.

Jon Bon Jovi.

The bonus of extending our stay in the US to be here for Husbands work do is that I get to attend his work concert featuring one of my favourite big haired rockers from the 80’s.

Today he doesn’t have the big hair or the denim on leather on denim with some tassels outfit (thank god) but he does still have the devilish grin and the rocking voice.

Jon Bon Jovi belted out Queen covers, pop songs and his special brand of Bad Medicine.

Gordon Ramsay Steak.

I had to ask our waiter “is it wrong to come here and order the chicken?”
Yes it is the table agreed. So I ordered a unique cut of steak called the American Rib Cap.

We also partook of the truffle fries. Moreish to the last chip.

My steak was meat meltingly delish.
If my steak is the consistency of meat flavoured candy floss then I know I am on to a winner. This was freshly made, twirled on a stick candyfloss. Not made five days ago and stuffed in a plastic bag to sit in the sun all day candyfloss. This was the good stuff.

(So glad I did not have the chicken.)
Phew.

Woolworths five & dime and luncheonette.

As soon as you open the chrome handled door, you know this diner is different. For one thing it is nestled in the far corner of an antique mall, but it’s most eye catching feature is that it is a piece of living history.

Visiting this luncheonette is like stepping back in time. Kind of like being on the set of a fifties movie.

And of course they are playing your favourite old songs. Today I heard most of the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Only the oldies mind you.

This pristine 1950s diner, immaculately preserved for your dining pleasure.

Make sure you order a milkshake.
They were so good we had to visit twice.

Antiquing.

Today was the perfect day. We stopped at a town that has a whole street filled with ‘antique malls’.
Antique malls are huge warehouse type spaces filled with hundreds of little booths run by various different sellers. Its all under the one roof and manned by the one checkout. It is a vintage store browsers idea of heaven.
These malls are massive and overwhelmingly awesome.
Their visual merchandising is of a super high standard – it’s a joy just being there seeing it all in its vintage glory!

I wish I could bring much much more home with me.
The glassware (milk glass, carnival glass etc.. Is just incredible)
Alas breakables are a terrible idea when travelling.

I found two simple unbreakable (not small – whoops) pieces to drag across the globe.
A silver candelabra and a pewter footed bowl. They should survive the flights home.

I left so much behind. Not sure I could have made room on my flight for wagon wheels, park benches, and massive tin street signs.

There was a whole vintage christmas stall that I wanted to stuff in my duffel bag. Squee!

This is the only bear I saw on the trip that would stay still long enough for a silly selfie! Gotcha!

Trailer trash.

We are traveling around the USA in a 30ft RV. (Recreational vehicle)

Staying at trailer parks with full hookup (power, water, sewerage) the basics really.

This is a fantastically fun way to get from National Park to National park.

Glamping of the most serious kind.
Tonight I am using wifi, listening to jazz, eating wine & cheese after a dip in the pool and reading Cosmo. Still in my bikini because it is about 26 degrees at 11pm at night. (After a high
of 37 today). Jealous?

Escaping New Zealand’s winter is the best. This is my first official Wintervention. It comes highly recommended.

I just found this image in Cosmo: so much awesome. Enjoy:

Sequoia National Park.

‘Big trees’ proclaimed the sign.

I’ve never known Americans to be understated.

Those sequoias are big. Bigger than the Empire State. Bigger than 50 blue whales joined end to end. Bigger than the Titanic.

(Not sure if my heart is ready for a Celine Dion reference just yet but there it is).

Also I must mention that today I saw bears. Wild bears. In the wild. Doing their wild thing. Going about their wild life. It was nothing short of magnificent.
No I didn’t get a photo. I was busy looking at the wild bears in the wilderness and being in the moment.

Celine Dion.

Celine stood us up.
Three times.
They said it was her throat. They lied.

Her husband is gravely ill.
I feel awful being selfishly grumpy about my #vacationfail (thank you Jimmy Fallon for giving my disorder a name.)

To drown my sorrows I ate an entire packet of skittles (Sugar is my drug of choice) as I tried to come to terms with the news of the third concert cancellation and her retirement from the stage until March 2015.

IMG_4339.JPG

Then we went to Britney Spears.

She blew my mind. In a good way. She was fit, focused, and on form.
(She just wasn’t Celine and I can’t fault her for that.)

Our quest for Celine will continue…

Billboards & small town USA.

I saw a billboard today that said:

“When the power of love is greater than the love of power, then we will have peace.”

There is some seriously dysfunctional and sick stuff happening in NZ politics right now (election year of course) that even though I am half a world away, it still makes me sad. Just reading this billboard made me a tiny bit happier about the human race. Someone gets it! Maybe we gave a chance after all..

As well as that profound billboard (which came and went so fast there was no time to scramble for my camera) I saw these hilarious signs in stores in small town USA:
