Saturday night at iD.

Such a buzz tonight at the station. The audience is 99% public tonight so the whole room feels different. Looser, up for anything especially a good night.

Mike McRoberts and wife agree that the 1600 people here tonight are going to see something special. “Saturday is the best night!” They enthuse.
McRoberts looses his place in the script at one point. Commenting to his wife “God you’ve got a beautiful voice.” He laughs, flustered. “Where am I?” “This IS date night” replies his wife. The audience laughs at a couple clearly in love.

The show starts:

RNZB at iDFWXV.

Two days a week I get to work alongside creatures from another planet: RNZB dancers.
I call them creatures from another planet because they are so supremely talented and ethereal that they have an otherworldly element. They look like us and talk like us but have the ability to do things with their body that astound and amaze us mere mortals.

Tonight in Dunedin the crowd at iD Dunedin Fashion Week were treated to a unique display of their talents up close and personal during the Tamsin Cooper catwalk collection where she debuted her menswear on their dancing forms.

Here is a snippet of their work. The piece is caller Platform 120 it was choreographed by Loughlan Prior especially for the show:

iDFWXV

Having an amazing night at iDFWXV – the Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers had choreographed a contemporary piece for designer Tamsin Cooper. Such fun. The buzz in the room became a roar as the crowd responded to the energy that the dancers displayed. They were debuting Tamsin Cooper menswear. Stunning silk and silk velvet jackets.

This is half time – lights are going down… so more later..

Accessory du Jour

Tonight I am at iDFWXV – in Dunedin there is a lot of black. I used it in my accessories for effect:

Some days a simple black skull is all the adornment you need:

High End Magazine

Today I worked with Tourism New Zealand on a media famil. High End magazine are in New Zealand for iD Dunedin Fashion Week and they are enjoying a stop over in Wellington before they fly to Dunedin.

I am the lucky stylist who gets to take them on a shopping tour to give them a taste of New Zealand and Wellington fashion.

We visited the gorgeous boutiques of the usual NZ designer suspects paying special attention to Zambesi and World due to their relevance to ID Dunedin. The Crane Brothers visit taught me a thing or two about merino wool suiting, so soft it should be illegal!
An interview with the talented designer and Jeweller Alison Blain was a highlight of the tour, hearing about her couture gowns, her longevity in the industry and why she loves working in Wellington. I quietly coveted her huge raw aqua marine ring and fell love with a few other items on the tour. Practical and pretty silver fern socks at Zambesi, torn jeans at Karen Walker, the softest leather bags & the cutest swan knit sweaters at Andrea Moore.

We visited Wellington jeweler Tory & Ko who I love for their feminine vintage aesthetic.
I took great pains to warn both the Tourism NZ rep and the journalist how cold it can get in Dunedin at night and left them at the end of our tour buying merino. I know they won’t regret this purchase because as well as being the longest catwalk in the Southern Hemisphere at 120 meters I’d hazard a guess that because it is outside at night, that it is also the coldest.

Video blog.

I write, source and style the video blogs for Westfield Queensgate. Today we shot the upcoming trends: Heritage (think Duchess of Cambridge) and Nineties (think Meg Ryan).
Videographer Duncan and I were joined by Ali from Rodney Wayne, Monique from Westfield, Chanel from Clinique (I know – awesome right!?) and two beautiful models Aleisha & Jo from Kirsty Bunny Management.
We got to talking about how each of has an ‘other’ name that our actual names are mistaken for when we are introduced. For example my ‘other’ name is Shelley. This conversation became hilarious because most people have that ‘other’ name that they are often mistakenly called so we could all join in with the joke. We even admitted that sometimes it is easier to admit defeat and just go with the wrong name than bother trying to correct someone – again. Chanel’s other name is Chantelle. Jo’s was Joanne, Ali’s was Sally – Monique’s was Monica! We all had one.
Although it is a day of work, having your hair and make-up done, wearing beautiful clothing, styling gorgeous professional models and talking into a camera is fun! I feel so blessed to work with these talented, humble and nice people. It was a great day.
We even got in an April Fools Day prank! (The details of which shall remain private)
I may have been penalized 30 press ups for my phone alarm going off during one of the video takes but they were on my to-do list anyway! Win/win.
Here is a peek behind the scenes of the shoot:

Accessory du jour.

Today is a busy day and as a reflection of the busy-ness in my brain I am wearing an intense floral dress with vibrant blues, pinks, oranges and purples over a black background. I have layered a soft pink angora cardigan then thrown it all out with a tan belt and navy shoes. I am a fan of the Clash.

International Day of Happiness.

March 20 is officially the international day of happiness.
The United Nations recognises that “the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal.”
The UN has aspirations of working towards ending conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions that human beings find themselves in – however we can do so much to contribute to our own happiness in simple and effective ways.

Last night I spoke to the Wellington Young Professionals about fashion, style and colour. “Banishing Black” was the subject and one of my key points was the effect that colour has on our mood. If we all agree the colour effects our emotional state then why is the country with the hugest teen suicide rate obsessed with wearing black all day and everyday. It is not known as the colour of mourning for no reason. Hello? Anyone?

At last nights talk I spoke about the best part of my job: all the hugs I receive after working with clients. I mentioned how different the world would be if more people hugged. Imagine if our world leaders greeted each other with hugs? How great would that be? To me an embrace signifies equality, acceptance, affection and unity. A great way to begin or to end a dialogue with a fellow human being.

Moving on to more immediate and personal forms of happiness I recently ask my Facebook friends to list their favourite go-to HAPPY songs. Songs that elevate your mood, songs that make your heart sing, your toes tap and your body want to move. The response was phenomenal and I am now the proud owner of a very awesome HAPPY playlist. It beings with Pharrell’s new song ‘Happy’ and ends with the six minute long Prince classic ‘it’s gonna be a beautiful night’ – I love that song!

That same day Cleo magazine contacted me to ask for fashion and style tips for their upcoming Happiness feature. Talk about serendipity. I was amped from listening to all of my happy songs so witting the tips was pure joy.

My good friend Eric had a note in his home that read: “look only where you want to go.” I think that applies perfectly to happiness. If you want to generate or create more happiness in your life then make a list of things that you can do that make you happy.
I first made such a list about 15 years ago – and when I was feeling blue I would grab my list and start doing the things on the list. It worked. I would take the action, however small, then I would magically begin to feel better.
Over the year the list has evolved and expanded. I have added some new things to the list and removed some things that no longer work for me. Today I will share some things I did this morning to enhance my happiness quota:

I used my favourite perfume du jour abundantly:

I wore my happy-inducing plaid pants that make me and others smile. I have received about five compliments already this morning.

20140320-101336.jpg

Then I went to my early morning meditation meeting to make sure I was all zen to start my day. ( which is probably why I laughed when I got a $65 parking ticket) lol

That my friends is how I started International Day of Happiness. I’m not sure how my actions will go towards ending conflict & poverty but I feel energized, uplifted and serene in my little corner of the planet.
How are you recognizing #happinessday today? Are you doing something significant or something small?

Accessory du jour.

When I fly, one of my travel tips that I swear by and live by is to wear your heaviest clothes and shoes.
Hence today at the airport I was wearing one of my many pairs of original authentic cowboy boots.
I adore them for their versatility and their comfort, not to mention the small fact that they are seriously cool:
